This production came into being in the time it became very obvious – for those of you who weren’t paying attention – that the situation in Iraq was running out of control.

In the White House spin-doctors where working overtime to keep the president out of the storm. And although little George W. until then had always been full of praise for secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld, spring 2004 he suddenly hung him out to dry. It looked like Rummie was to be sacrificed. Strange of course, after all Rumsfeld was responsible for what was going on in Iraq, but the president is always more responsible. We felt the need to summarize these events in a (*). However, in September 2004 George W. Bush was re-elected to office and Donald Rumsfeld could also stay on.

Videosong

At first glance a videosong may seem to be an ordinary video clip. But nothing is more untrue.

A songÂ like Few Additional words is constructed according to the principles of the VJ software Vjamm. This software makes it possible to play on a visual sampler by using your keyboard. By hitting a key not only a sound is produced, but photo’s, video fragments and animations are also evoked. For example, when you strike a central C you hear and see Rumsfeld say ‘A few additional words’. The whole song is construed in this manner. Sound and vision are a complete unity. Manipulating sounds – for example adjusting pitch, timbre or mix – affects the images in a corresponding fashion. And vice versa. Sound and vision are a complete unity: what you hear is what you see, and what you see is what you hear. For this reason we prefer to speak of a ‘video-song’ rather than a ‘video clip’.

Bumpers voor de VPRO

After reading that the editors of the Dutch tvs-tationVPRO Nachtpodium urgently needed to socalled ‘bumpertjes’ in its broadcasts, Photo Opportunity didn’t hestitate, but instead put on their brainstormhats and went to work. Three movies were the result.

We put it on disk & sent in to the VPRO. To our surprise, the editors of Nachtpodium were hardly polite enough to confirm the receipt of our contribution. No ‘thank you’, no email about possible broadcasts, and so on. The ‘Being a jerk’-mentality in the VPRO apparently still highly valued.

That does not alter the fact that the movies were fun. So we put them on you tube.
